Magic Lamp: An Illuminated Tribute to Nature's Mysteries

Designer Daragh Enright's Award-Winning Fusion of Craftsmanship and Technology

Enright's inspiration for the Magic Lamp stems from the Liberty Cap (Psilocybe Semilanceata), a psychedelic mushroom known for its healing potential. As the mushroom's significance in therapeutic applications grows, its distinctive form becomes increasingly recognizable, carrying profound meaning and warranting attention.

The Magic Lamp stands out for its original design, which uniquely combines 3D printing technology with handcrafted wood. Each piece is unique due to the handmade stem and base, and the lamp uses ecological materials, including PLA plant-based plastic and locally sourced hardwoods from managed forests. The lamp offers three brightness levels, controlled by a touch-sensitive dimmer switch concealed in the base.

The lamp is produced in a small workshop using Ender 3 pro V2 3D printers and woodworking machinery. The wooden part is hand-carved and comprises three original pieces joined together. The lamp's technical specifications are a width of 150, depth of 150, and height of 650.

The Magic Lamp's interaction is simple yet effective. It features a three-stage dimmer switch operated by touching any part of the metal base. This design project began in early 2020 in Ceske Budejovice, Czechia, and was completed by the end of the year. It has been available for purchase on Etsy since January 2021.

Enright's design process involved extensive research and experimentation in his workshop and with design software. After experiencing the 'magical' psychedelic effects of the Liberty Cap mushroom, he decided to capture this experience by using its form as a lamp design. The electricity and light bring the lamp to life, echoing the 'life force' he perceived in the mushrooms.

The Magic Lamp was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2022. This prestigious accolade is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Magic Lamp, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits this description.
